What is Bun Dau Mam Tom?

Bun Dau Mam Tom is a special Vietnamese dish that includes at least 3 ingredients in a big flat winnowing basket.

One of the three most important ingredients is rice noodles. The noodles used in bun dau mam tom are served in rectangles, unlike the noodles used in other soup dishes, which are separated. It is referred to as Bun La and is a type of noodle that has been compressed into patches and cut into cubes approximately the size of two fingers to dip in the soul of the dish – Mam Tom.

The second ingredient that is also listed in the name is “dau’ which means tofu. Tofu will be cut into small squares and fried in hot oil until it puffs and is crispy outside but still soft on the inside.

Finally, the soul of Bun Dau Mam Tom is the shrimp paste which means “Mam Tom” in Vietnam. It smells a little bit pungent and very salty, like any other Vietnamese sauce. However, you can decrease the smell and the salty flavor by adding some spoons of sugar, slices of chili, and kumquats for a better taste. Slowly mix it until the mixture has combined into one and voila, you can never forget the taste of Bun Dau Mam Tom

More addition, you can have some other choices besides tofu to eat with Mam Tom. Vietnamese have many special traditional fried dishes such as Com, steamed pork, Nem Chua, and Doi. Bun dau mam tom is served with cucumber slices and an assortment of herbs.
