Although Vietnam shouldn’t be remembered as little more than a battlefield, it’s significantly important to remember the heroic deeds and horrific tragedies that occurred here so that they may never happen again. This is the intent of the War Remnants Museum, a museum for peace in Ho Chi Minh City. Built on the former site of an ancient Buddhist pagoda that was occupied and gradually destroyed by French forces, the Museum is dedicated to researching, collecting, preserving, and displaying documents, pictures, and artifacts that serve as testaments to the crimes that invaders committed on Vietnamese soil. Through its activities, the Museum spreads awareness about the free and independent Vietnamese spirit, the unwillingness to bend to enemies’ wills, and the commitment to protecting international peace and unity. Over 20,000 documents, artifacts, and films are housed at the Museum, of which 1,500 are featured in eight regular exhibitions. The facilities also include reconstructions of the “tiger cages” prison cells at Con Dao and Phu Quoc prisons and wax statues of the patriots who suffered there.
