Vietnam weather in September

The weather of Vietnam in September continues to diverge. The North and the South sees rainfall lessen as we approach October, but Central Vietnam gets increasingly frequent and stronger bouts of rain. For people who dislike humidity, Northern Vietnam is definitely the place to go to enjoy the cool air, as opposed to the humid and wet that plagues Central and Southern cities,

Crowds & Costs

Good news if you have free space in your September calendar. Deals on tickets and accommodation can be found more readily since this month is in the low tourist season. The weather barring people from lounging on the beaches will also help cut down on the crowds in Central and Southern Vietnam in September.

Where to go in Vietnam in September

Bach Ma National Park

If you have the chance to visit Hue, don’t “miss your appointment” with the Bach Ma National Park, one of the best places to visit in Vietnam. The mountain range that borders Thua Thien – Hue and Da Nang provinces is the home of an array of flora and fauna that boggles the mind and one of the most diverse nature reserves in Vietnam. At an altitude of 1,450m over sea level, this area can experience four seasons in a single day.

Bach Ma has been populated by resorts since the 1940s, and for a very good reason, as its natural beauty offers an amazing experience of rest and renewal. Most travelers, however, choose to book their accommodation in nearby Hue for better access to that city and its imperial citadel (another worthwhile visit).

Tam Coc

After the COVID-19 pandemic, as one of the best places to visit in North Vietnam, Ninh Binh greeted over 3 million visitors in the first 10 months of 2022. A clean and cool autumn atmosphere suffuses the scenery, vibrant with green flora and golden ripe rice. You can leave the rat race behind and step into nature with a boat ride on Van Long Pond, a trek through Cuc Phuong National Park, or explore the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.

However, the “three caves” of Tam Coc and the two caves of Bich Dong is a delightful fairytale world and a must-see on Vietnam in September trip to Ninh Binh. These cave systems are only accessible by boat and adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and sizes. Their otherworldly beauty have earned them the epithet “the second most beautiful cave(s) under Southern skies”.

Hanoi and northern Vietnam

If you’re a fan of fall, you need to visit Hanoi during Vietnam in September. It’s no accident that this season has become a trademark of the capital, immortalized in songs, poems, and other artistic endeavors. The tree-lined streets are ready to cast rivulets of golden leaves down at the slightest brush of the wind. The crisp, chill air (“sweater weather”) invites you to cuddle up with your loved ones even as you travel.

Don’t forget to try cốm – pounded green rice wrapped in fragrant lotus leaves – and the many, many delightful treats that are derived from this “gift from the young rice” (as christened by writer Thạch Lam). From Hanoi, you should consider making your way to northern area where you can find many stunning golden color rice terrace fields which are in harvest season.

Mekong Delta

September is the most beautiful month of the year for a trip from Saigon to Mekong Delta. The average temperature stays stable at around 28C, and this is the “floating water” season, when water from upriver of the Mekong flows through “Vietnam’s granary” to deposit silt that makes the soil here ever more fertile and bring with it a glut of fresh, delicious shrimp and fish.

The best way to traverse the delta is by boat. You can take a luxury cruise down the Mekong River as you learn about its history and marvel at its beauty. You can also brave small wooden crafts that take you through the arcadian countryside and even melaleuca forests where the water is covered with plants and the sky is a thin ribbon above your head. Even with the dizzying speed of urbanization and man’s attempt to breach into Nature, this land retains its pristine beauty as its people live and thrive in harmony with all of Mother Earth’s creations.

What to do in Vietnam in September

In the north, with the rain easing up, the unbeaten tracks of Sapa are once again safe to trek through. Mu Cang Chai will enter its harvest season and its terraced rice fields will turn golden. A holiday on the beaches of Nha Trang is now out of the question given the poor weather, as are trips to the caves of Phong Nha – Ke Bang or hiking in the Central Highlands for the same reason. Urban areas are easier to navigate, however, if you always have your rain gear.

September Events & Holiday

Vietnam National Day

One of the few Vietnamese national holidays celebrated using the Gregorian calendar, September 2 is a remembrance of the same day in 1945. On this day. Emperor Bao Dai of the Nguyen Dynasty abdicated, ending 1050 years of feudal rule, and President Ho Chi Minh gave a speech announcing Vietnamese independence.

It’s an important holiday in modern Vietnam. The streets of Hanoi and other provinces and cities nationwide are all adorned in the red and golden hues of flags, flowers, posters, and banners.

Mid-Autumn Festival

This harvest festival is celebrated as a children’s holiday in Vietnam. Every full moon on the eighth lunar month, people lay out sweet feasts, moon-gaze, and enjoy golden brown mooncakes or snowy white. Many places organize street performances such as lion, qilin, and dragon dances. Children may parade through the cities and towns in masks resembling fictional characters, colorful paper lanterns in hand.

Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival

The fisherfolk of Do Son, Hai Phong province celebrate the Buffalo Fighting Festival beginning on the eighth or ninth day of the eighth lunar month every year. The custom is so ancient that there’s no single origin story for it, but most versions agree that the battle between buffalos ends with a sacrifice and an offer to some mythological or spiritual figure (usually a water goddess) in exchange for a successful, smooth-sailing year. Whichever village whose buffalo representative wins the battle and gets sacrificed to the Goddess will be particularly lucky, as are people who get to eat the cooked offerings.

Nghinh Ong Festival

The tradition of whale worshipping is still alive and well in Southern Vietnam. These majestic animals are often thought of as Lords and Ladies of the sea, guarding the fisherfolk against harm. Beached whales are given funeral rites and buried like humans. Many Southern locales have festivals for the whales, but one of the largest takes place in Can Thanh town, Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh city, on the 14th to 17th day of the eighth lunar month.
