Vietnam in October is one of those halfway months where it’s not considered the best time to visit Vietnam and the best month to travel in Vietnam compared to other months. However, you can still have a great time in most provinces with affordable accommodations and other services.

Vietnam weather in October

The rains are finally departing Vietnam – well, almost everywhere. With the weather in Vietnam, the North and the South dries out and takes a breather. As Central Vietnam gets its turn under the dark clouds because the monsoon season hits its peak there but it doesn’t sound that hopeless. Apart from the possibility of having some storms come over, Central Vietnam is still a “can’t-miss” destination.

Crowds & Costs

The further into October it gets, the more crowded Vietnam becomes. As people take advantage of the nice, sunny days in most of the country. Flight tickets may be cheap, but accommodations are less so. Luckily, the beaches of Southern Vietnam aren’t overly crowded yet.

Where to go in Vietnam in October

Ha Giang

Vietnam in October is the end of fall and the start of winter in Ha Giang. Making it one of the best time to visit North Vietnam. Pack warmly and layer up, as the temperature may get hot around noon but plummets with nightfall. This season, the province is adorned by beautiful, vast fields of purple buckwheat flowers. A cover crop for the locals until they were able to plant rice again. You can have the best time to visit Ha Giang Vietnam with the Ha Giang Loop tour (3 days and 2 nights) by car or motorcycle to marvel at the deep canyons, imposing mountains, and clear blue skies.

Mu Cang Chai

In Mu Cang Chai, however, rice is just beginning to ripen. The terraced rice fields drape the mountains in a green coat that gradually shifts to gold, in an unforgettable sight. Book your accommodation at a homestay and enjoy a cozy time with friendly local families who will treat you to delicious authentic food from the ethnic communities that you might be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. You can also relax in a herbal bath invented by the Dao community to take your aches and pains away from hiking (or perching on a speeding motorbike). Also, you can travel to some places near here like Lung Cu flag tower, Hoang Su Phi, Quan Ba heaven gate,…

Buon Ma Thuot

If you’re traveling to Buon Ma Thuot any time between May and the end of Vietnam in October. Pack warmly, bring your rain gear, mosquito repellant. And sturdy, anti-slip boots protect you from the wet red basalt soil. Watch your speed – many locals let their domestic animals roam free and you wouldn’t want to cause a traffic accident. Visit the Dak Lak Museum to learn more about this land of elephants and coffee. That is alongside the vast diversity of its ethnic groups. (Buon Me Thuot in particular and Dak Lak province in general is a leading worldwide exporter of coffee so strong it could practically stand up and beat you with the cup).

What to do in Vietnam in October

Explore Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark

In 2010, UNESCO recognized the Dong Van Karst Plateau as a Global Geopark. So, Dong Van Karst Plateay Geopark is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam. In addition to its unique and stunning scenery and array of wildlife. It also was home to 19 groups of valuable ancient organisms. Its 17 ethnic groups (out of Vietnam’s 54 total) bring diversity and color to life among these mountains. Traversing this area can be dangerous with its terrain covered in wickedly sharp rugger rocks (with the misleadingly adorable yet accurate name of Đá Tai Mèo, “cat’s ear rocks”), but a worthwhile experience nevertheless.

Visit Cat Tien National Park

Cat Tien National Park is the place to be for adventurous souls. Pack light, sweat-absorbent clothing that covers as much of your body as possible to shield you from mosquitoes and other creepy crawlies. Staying overnight in the park allows you to observe nocturnal predators hunt – a thrilling experience! Over 60 rare freshwater crocodile species live in Bau Sau (Crocodile Lake). As for local specialties, don’t forget to try common water hyacinth soup with fish. A celebration of Vietnamese ingenuity, this dish pairs a staple protein with a vegetable commonly considered invasive at worst and useless at best to delicious results. You can find more in South Vietnam 1 week itinerary if you want to take a trip to Cat Tien National Park.

Get to Yok Don National Park

The elephants of Yok Don once were forced to carry visitors and many were mistreated – but steps have been taken since 2018 to remedy this. Now, you can travel with a small tour group to quietly observe them living freely in the wilds, unbothered by humans, and learn about their existence here. If the weather permits (since sudden rains are still the norm here), you can even take a dip in one of the Park’s waterfalls. This National Park, away from the city and its light pollution, is a delightful place to pitch tents beneath the stars and laugh with your friends around the campfire.

Go to Dray Sap Falls

The Ede people call this waterfall “Smoke Falls” because its water mist resembles smoke. It is a beautiful place and worth a visit (almost all tours to Dak Lak and Buon Me Thuot stop here) but associated with a tragedy: two star-crossed lovers took their lives here, causing the Serepok River to split in agony and wrath, creating the Dray Sap and Dray Nur falls.

October Events & Holiday

Don-ta Festival

This is the largest festival for the Khmer Vietnamese people. It’s held annually at the end of the eighth and the start of the ninth lunar month. A fascinating activity in this festival is ox racing, with the participation of 38 pairs of oxen with the bravest and most deft men of the villages. For the largest ox race, travel to the Bay Nui area in An Giang province.

Ka-te Festival

During the Kate Festival, the Cham Vietnamese community in Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces honor national heroes, ancestors, deities, and long-gone Cham kings. The festivities are held at the Cham temples in those provinces, themselves built to honor the kings. The attendees pay respects to the gods and wish for a peaceful, prosperous future filled with health and wealth.

Mid-Autumn Festival – The Most Famous Festival In Vietnam

Keo Hanh Thien Pagoda Festival

Held in the ancient Keo pagoda in Hanh Thien village with over 400 years of history, the three-day festival honors the monk who founded the pagoda, tamed beasts, flew in the air, walked underwater, and cured an Emperor. There are processions, spiritual dances, ceremonies such as changing clothing for the statues, boat races (concurrently with the processions), and more. However, many traditions have been lost with the times; for example, competitions for drummers and kèn artists (a Vietnamese horn instrument), or for the best speech (the funniest) to pay respects to the gods, are no longer part of the day.

Dinh Thay-Thim Festival

The Dinh Thay – Thim Festival has become a long-ingrained tradition and unique cultural quirk of Binh Thuan province. As most Vietnamese holidays do, the festival is divided into two sections: the ritual (lễ) and the celebration (hội). In the former part, there are spiritual events that allow people to pray for their family’s health, happiness, and smooth sailing in business. The celebration is a time to have fun, play games, and let your hair down with performances, games, recitations of stories, martial arts demonstrations, and more. They attract the observation and participation of locals and tourists alike.

Besides my unlimited passion for traveling, a professional tour guide for over a decade, I have been taking photographs since sitting at Hanoi of the University of Culture in the early 2000s. Photography started as a hobby but it was seriously taken due to my work relations and my significant passion for the beauty of our world, especially in Southeast Asian parts such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

Within a few years of taking photographs, my works began to be recognized by many reliable international publications such as AFAR Travel, The Times, and The Daily Telegraph newspaper. In addition, I continuously add to my growing profile by winning numerous major awards: 3rd Position of The Independent Photographer 2018, 1st Position of Amateur Photographer of the year 2018, Grand Prize Winner of the AFAR Travel Photography 2019, and a Gold Award of San Francisco Bay International Photography 2020.

I photograph a wide variety of subjects, from travel to landscapes to street scenes. I enjoy documenting the East’s rich cultural heritage and its land soaked in glorious sunrise or sunset light in remote and secluded spots. And, I am very happy to share my knowledge and experience with you. You can visit Luminousvietnamtour to explore tour!
