In addition to its stunning mountains and waters, the Trang An Landscape Complex- A Unesco World Heritage Site is also home to Hoa Lu, an ancient capital of Vietnam, established by the Dinh Dynasty as the first feudal center of power. Hoa Binh: Praying for rain Festival (the 4th lunar month)

On nights when the moon has a red or yellow halo, the Thai people of Hoa Binh organize ceremonies to pray for rain, as the halo is an omen of droughts that threaten their crops and livelihood. Young people form groups that go from house to house.

Beginning with the family with the oldest woman in the village. They will then invite the elder to come out in her fineries and sing together to ask the skies for water. She will emerge with a basin full of water and splash the procession with it. In the next houses, elders merely give the procession some sticky rice and salt.

Once the visits are finished, the procession returns to its starting point (the common house). They will light torches, go down to the river, and splash each other with the blessed water, and no one goes home until they’re soaked and freezing. The ceremony is repeated if the droughts begin or continue.

Quang Binh: Praying for a good season Festival (14th-16th of the 4th lunar month)

The people of Bao Ninh village in Quang Binh also pray for a good season. But their entreaties are directed at the whale spirit who saved their fishermen amid a storm long ago, and two fishermen, father and son, worshipped after their deaths. Much like most Vietnamese traditional holidays, the event consists of two parts: ritual and celebration. Firstly, Lord Whale’s bones are paraded from the village to the communal building. Two mediums will channel the spirits to give sage advice. Then comes the celebration, in which women sing and mock-row on dry land to resemble rowboat crews, while the men dance. They wish for calm seas, fruitful fishing trips, and eternal abundance and health for the village.
